Toy Worlds Museum Basel

About

Toy Worlds Museum Basel is one of the city’s most enchanting destinations, a place where childhood imagination is preserved with extraordinary detail. Spread across several floors, the museum houses more than 6,000 toys, making it one of Europe’s largest collections dedicated to dolls, miniature worlds, and mechanical playthings. Its atmosphere is part nostalgia, part wonder. Inside, visitors encounter meticulously crafted dollhouses—some centuries old—complete with tiny furniture, working lights, and miniature scenes that reveal how domestic life was once imagined. One of the most interesting facts is that the museum owns one of the world’s most significant teddy bear collections, including rare Steiff bears and prototypes that show how the iconic toy evolved. Mechanical toys are another highlight: tin trains, wind‑up figures, and early automata demonstrate the ingenuity of pre‑digital entertainment. Seasonal displays, especially the winter and Christmas scenes, immerse visitors in elaborate miniature landscapes filled with moving parts, glowing windows, and tiny characters.
