The Pharmacy Museum of the University of Basel is in Basel’s Old Town, on Totengässlein. It’s tucked between Market Square and Petersplatz, housed in a medieval building called “Zum Vorderen Sessel” that dates to the 13th century. The museum belongs to the University of Basel and is one of the world’s largest collections on the history of pharmacy. Inside you’ll find old apothecary shops, alchemy laboratories, ceramic drug jars, mortars, scales, and books from the Renaissance to the 19th century. Highlights include a reconstructed alchemist’s workshop, toxicology displays, and rooms showing how medicines were prepared before industrial production. The atmosphere is dense with wood-paneled cabinets and glass vials. From the museum, walk 2 minutes to Market Square with Basel’s red-sandstone Rathaus, the Town Hall. Basel Minster, the Gothic cathedral with Rhine views from the Pfalz terrace, is 5 minutes away through medieval alleys. The Museum der Kulturen and the Basel Historical Museum in the Barfüsserkirche are both within a 7-minute walk. The Kunstmuseum Basel, with works from Holbein to Picasso, is 8 minutes down Rittergasse.
