The Antikenmuseum Basel und Sammlung Ludwig is at St. Alban-Graben 5, on the edge of Basel’s Old Town. It’s the only museum in Switzerland devoted entirely to ancient Mediterranean cultures. The collection spans Egyptian, Greek, Etruscan, and Roman art, with highlights like Greek vases, Roman sculptures, and Egyptian mummies. The building faces the Skulpturhalle, which houses plaster casts of famous ancient sculptures. You’re a 3-minute walk from Basel’s cultural core. The Kunstmuseum Basel is right across the street and holds the world’s oldest public art collection, from Holbein to Picasso to contemporary works. Walk down St. Alban-Graben to reach the Basel Historical Museum – Barfüsserkirche in 7 minutes, set in a former church. St. Alban-Tor, a medieval city gate, is 5 minutes east and leads into the picturesque St. Alban district. Follow the narrow lanes and stairs down to the Rhine. Here you’ll find the St. Alban-Fähre, a traditional ferry pulled by the river’s current, and the St. Alban-Tal with its old mills and half-timbered houses. The Basel Minster is a 10-minute walk through the Old Town. From the Pfalz terrace behind the cathedral you get a wide view over the Rhine and Kleinbasel. Marktplatz with the red Rathaus is also 10 minutes away via Freie Strasse, Basel’s main shopping street.
