Museum Kleines Klingental is one of Basel’s most atmospheric small museums, set inside the former Klingental Dominican convent overlooking the Rhine. Its charm lies in how it preserves fragments of the city’s medieval past while revealing the craftsmanship behind Basel’s most iconic landmark, the Münster. The museum’s core collection consists of original architectural elements removed during 19th‑century renovations: sandstone figures, gargoyles, tracery windows, and sculpted capitals that once adorned the cathedral’s façade. Inside, visitors can examine these details up close, appreciating carvings that are normally seen from far below. The highlight is the collection of life‑size medieval statues, including expressive apostles and saints whose weathered surfaces tell centuries of stories. A reconstructed cloister segment evokes monastic life, while scale models show how Basel’s riverfront and cathedral hill evolved over time. One particularly interesting feature is the panoramic view from the museum’s terrace, offering a rare angle on the Rhine and the old city walls. Temporary exhibitions often explore Basel’s urban history, archaeology, and architectural conservation, making the museum both intimate and intellectually rich.

Museum Kleines Klingental is located at Unterer Rheinweg 26 in Kleinbasel, on the north bank of the Rhine. It’s housed in a former medieval convent from 1274, right next to the Klingental church ruins. The museum focuses on the history of Basel, city development, and the original 24 medieval sculptures from Basel Minster. You reach it with a 10-minute walk from Mittlere Brücke or by tram to Rheingasse. You’re in the heart of Kleinbasel’s historic quarter. Step outside and you’re on the Rhine promenade, perfect for walking or watching the ferry boats. Cross the Mittlere Brücke to reach Grossbasel and the Old Town in 8 minutes. The Basel Minster is just across the river. Its red-sandstone towers and Pfalz terrace offer views over Kleinbasel and the Rhine. Around the Minster, explore the narrow lanes of the Old Town to Marktplatz and the red Rathaus. A 5-minute walk along the river takes you to the Museum Tinguely, with Jean Tinguely’s kinetic sculptures and a park on the Rhine. The Klingental exhibition space for contemporary art is next door to the museum.
