The Museum of Contemporary Art Basel, known as Museum für Gegenwartskunst, is in St. Alban-Tal in Basel, Switzerland. It’s part of the Kunstmuseum Basel and was the first public museum in Europe built exclusively for contemporary art when it opened in 1980. The building sits by the St. Alban-Teich canal in a quiet former industrial area. The collection focuses on art from the 1960s to today. You’ll see works by Joseph Beuys, Bruce Nauman, Rosemarie Trockel, Jeff Wall, and many Swiss and international artists. Exhibitions cover video, installation, photography, painting, and sculpture, with rotating shows alongside the permanent collection. From the museum, walk 2 minutes to the Kunstmuseum Basel main building on St. Alban-Graben, which houses art from the 15th century to modernism. The historic St. Alban district is full of medieval buildings, galleries, and the Paper Mill Museum by the canal. Basel’s Old Town and the red-sandstone Rathaus on Market Square are 10 minutes away on foot. The Rhine River promenade is nearby for walks, cafes, and traditional ferry crossings.
