Museum of Cultures Basel is one of Switzerland’s most engaging anthropological museums, offering a vivid journey through global traditions, rituals, and everyday life. Located near the Münster, it combines a historic building with striking contemporary architecture, creating a dynamic setting for its vast collection. The museum’s origins date back to the 1840s, when Basel began collecting ethnographic objects from expeditions and scientific exchanges—an early commitment that shaped its international reputation. Inside, visitors encounter themed exhibitions that explore how societies celebrate, mourn, worship, and create. One of the most interesting facts is that the museum holds one of Europe’s largest collections of Oceanic art, including intricately carved masks and ceremonial objects from Melanesia and Polynesia. The Museum der Kulturen Basel, or Museum of Cultures, is in the center of Basel, Switzerland, on Münsterplatz. It stands right next to Basel Minster in the Old Town, housed in a historic building with a striking modern roof extension added in 2011. It’s one of Europe’s most important ethnographic museums. The collection holds over 300,000 objects from around the world, focusing on everyday life, rituals, and art from Africa, Asia, the Americas, and Oceania. Exhibitions explore themes like textiles, masks, religion, and cultural exchange, using both historic artifacts and contemporary works. From the museum, step directly onto Münsterplatz, a large cobbled square framed by colorful townhouses. Basel Minster, the city’s Gothic cathedral, is next door. Climb the towers or enjoy Rhine views from the Pfalz terrace behind it. Walk 3 minutes downhill to the Rhine promenade and the Mittlere Brücke, Basel’s oldest bridge to Kleinbasel. Market Square with the red-sandstone Rathaus, the Town Hall, is 5 minutes away through medieval alleys.
