Kunsthalle Basel sits at Steinenberg 7 in Basel’s city center, directly on Barfüsserplatz. The building shares space with the Swiss Architecture Museum S AM and is one of Switzerland’s leading institutions for contemporary art. Barfüsserplatz is a major tram stop, so you can get here from Basel SBB station in about 5 minutes. You’re in the middle of Basel’s art and history district. Inside the same building, S AM Swiss Architecture Museum presents rotating exhibitions on architecture and urbanism. Across Barfüsserplatz stands Barfüsserkirche, now home to the Basel Historical Museum with medieval artifacts and the Basel Treasure. Walk 4 minutes north to reach the Basel Minster. The red-sandstone cathedral dates to the 12th century and its Pfalz terrace gives you a wide view over the Rhine. From there, wander the Old Town’s cobbled lanes to Marktplatz and see the bright red Rathaus. Major museums are close by. The Kunstmuseum Basel is an 8-minute walk and holds the world’s oldest public art collection, from Holbein to Picasso. The Museum Tinguely is 10 minutes away by tram along the Rhine.
