St. Vitus' Cathedral

St. Vitus’ Cathedral is one of Rijeka’s most distinctive landmarks, the only rotunda‑style cathedral in Croatia. Its unusual circular form dates back to the 17th century, inspired by Venetian Baroque architecture and built on the site of an earlier church linked to the city’s patron saint. Inside, the highlight is the Baroque altar dedicated to St. Vitus, adorned with marble, gilded details, and expressive sculptures. A notable curiosity is the “miraculous crucifix,” associated with a 13th‑century legend in which the figure supposedly bled after being struck — a story that helped establish St. Vitus as the city’s protector. The side chapels contain elegant altars, carved confessionals, and religious objects that reveal centuries of devotion.
