JGL Museum of Pharmacy in Rijeka is a refined, beautifully curated tribute to the art and science of healing. Set inside a restored historic villa, the museum blends elegant design with a deep dive into pharmaceutical heritage, making it one of the city’s most distinctive cultural stops. Its mission is simple yet captivating: to show how medicine evolved from ancient herbal knowledge to modern pharmaceutical innovation. Inside, the highlight is the reconstructed 19th‑century apothecary, complete with wooden counters, glass jars, scales, and tools once used by pharmacists across the region. This room feels like stepping into a working pharmacy from another century. The museum’s collection includes rare botanical illustrations, early medical packaging, handwritten prescriptions, and instruments that reveal how remedies were prepared before industrial production. Interactive displays explain how medicinal plants were identified, dried, and transformed into ointments or tinctures. Modern sections explore today’s pharmaceutical research, connecting tradition with contemporary science. The museum also presents the story of JGL, one of Croatia’s leading pharmaceutical companies, showing how local expertise grew into international innovation. JGL Museum of Pharmacy offers a calm, elegant experience that blends history, craftsmanship, and science into a single narrative.
Rijeka Croatia
The JGL Museum of Pharmacy is located at Užarska Street 11, in the very heart of Rijeka’s Old Town, just off the main Korzo promenade. Opened in October 2020 as the first private pharmacy museum in Croatia, it was founded by the pharmaceutical company Jadran Galenic Laboratory in cooperation with the City of Rijeka. The modern, interactive exhibition uses multimedia and augmented reality to trace the history of pharmacy in Rijeka, Croatia and the world, from ancient remedies to the role of local scientists in modern pharmaceutical development. Its position in the pedestrian zone makes it perfect for exploring the center on foot. Right outside is the Korzo, the lively main street filled with cafes, shops and historic palaces. Within a minute’s walk you will find the City Clock Tower, the Church of the Assumption and Rijeka Cathedral. A short stroll away are several other museums, including the Peek and Poke Computer Museum and the City Museum of Rijeka – The Cube, as well as the entrance to the Rijeka Tunnel. The Maritime and History Museum of the Croatian Littoral in the former Governor’s Palace and the Natural History Museum are also close by. The waterfront, the market and the Croatian National Theatre Ivan Zajc are all within easy reach.
