Maritime and History Museum of the Croatian Littoral, housed in Rijeka’s grand Governor’s Palace, offers one of the richest cultural experiences on the northern Adriatic. The Maritime and History Museum of the Croatian Littoral is housed in the former Governor's Palace, one of the most beautiful historic buildings in Rijeka. It is located at Muzejski trg, right on the edge of the city center and just above the main waterfront. This imposing nineteenth century palace was once the residence of the Hungarian governor when Rijeka was an important port of the empire, and today its ornate halls and preserved furniture are an exhibit in themselves. The museum presents the rich history, culture and maritime tradition of Rijeka and the Kvarner region, from prehistoric finds to ship models, navigation instruments, uniforms and even an original life vest from the Titanic, built in this region. Its collections trace the identity of the coast and the people who shaped it. Thanks to its location, you are within easy walking distance of many other attractions. Right next to it is the City Museum of Rijeka – The Cube, and a few steps away begins the Korzo, the lively pedestrian promenade with cafes, shops and the City Clock Tower. Nearby are St. Vitus Cathedral, the Natural History Museum and the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art. A short uphill walk takes you to Trsat Castle, which offers spectacular views over the city and the bay, while the Rijeka market, the theater and the harbor promenade are also close by.
