Astronomical Center Rijeka

About

Perched on Sveti Križ hill, the Astronomical Center Rijeka is the only facility in Croatia that combines a public observatory with a modern digital planetarium. Opened in 2009, it transformed a former military complex into one of the city’s most imaginative cultural spaces, offering panoramic views over the Kvarner Bay before you even step inside. The planetarium is the main attraction. Its dome uses a full‑digital projection system capable of recreating the night sky with extraordinary precision, from ancient constellations to distant galaxies. Shows often blend astronomy with mythology, making them engaging even for visitors new to the subject. A fun detail: the projection system can simulate the sky from any point on Earth—or even Mars. Inside the observatory, you’ll find a powerful Meade telescope, used for public stargazing sessions. On clear nights, visitors can observe the Moon’s craters, Saturn’s rings, or seasonal deep‑sky objects. The center also displays small exhibitions on space exploration, including models of spacecraft and interactive panels explaining cosmic phenomena.

Location

The Astronomical Centre Rijeka is located high above the city, on Sveti Kriz hill, just above the Trsat district. Housed in a beautifully restored old fortress, it is one of the rare places where a historic military building has become a modern centre for science and stargazing. The location was chosen for a reason, up here you are away from the dense city lights, with a clear view of the sky and a stunning panorama of Rijeka, the Kvarner Bay and the islands. It is very close to one of Rijeka's most famous sights, Trsat Castle. The medieval fortress is only a short walk away and offers amazing views, summer concerts and a cozy cafe in its courtyard. Right below the castle you will find the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Trsat, the most important pilgrimage site in this part of Croatia, with its baroque church and Franciscan monastery. The whole Trsat area is pleasant for a stroll, with quiet parks, old stairways like the famous Petar Kruzic Staircase that connects Trsat with the city centre, and small family restaurants. From the hill you can easily head down to the city centre to explore Korzo promenade, the City Clock Tower and the waterfront, all just a few minutes drive from the centre.
