Trsat Castle

About

Trsat Castle rises above Rijeka on a hill long associated with legend, pilgrimage, and defence. Its origins reach back to a prehistoric hillfort, later transformed into a medieval stronghold guarding the route between the coast and the interior. The Frankopan family rebuilt it in the 13th century, and its strategic position made it one of the most important lookout points in the region. Today, the castle blends preserved medieval walls with 19th‑century Romantic restorations that give it its distinctive silhouette. Inside the fortress, visitors can explore courtyards, stone passages, and towers offering sweeping views over Rijeka, Kvarner Bay, and the islands. The central courtyard often hosts exhibitions and cultural events, adding a lively contemporary layer to the historic setting. The small museum rooms display archaeological finds, old maps, and objects linked to the castle’s defensive past. One of the most atmospheric spots is the lookout tower, where the panorama reveals how the castle once controlled the entire bay. Nearby stands the Shrine of Our Lady of Trsat, a major pilgrimage site connected to the legend of the Holy House of Nazareth.

Trsat Castle
Location

Trsat Castle is one of the oldest fortifications on the Croatian coast and the most impressive viewpoint in Rijeka. It is located on a steep hill 138 meters above sea level in the Trsat district, northeast of the city center, dominating Rijeka and the Kvarner Bay. First mentioned in 1288 as a parish center and later developed by the Frankopan princes, it was romantically restored in the nineteenth century. Today the castle courtyard hosts open-air concerts, art exhibitions, a gallery, a souvenir shop and the Gradina cafe, while offering breathtaking panoramic views of the city, the sea and the islands. Reaching the castle is part of the experience. You can climb the famous Petar Kružić stairway with 561 steps that connects the city center with Trsat, or take a city bus or car. Right next to the castle is the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Trsat, the most important pilgrimage site in Croatia with its Franciscan monastery and church. The charming Trsat square with cafes and old houses surrounds it. Down in the city, within easy reach, are the Maritime and History Museum of the Croatian Littoral, the City Museum of Rijeka, the Peek and Poke Computer Museum, the Korzo promenade, St. Vitus Cathedral and the Rijeka Tunnel.
