The City Museum of Rijeka is housed in the magnificent Sugar Refinery Palace on Krešimirova Street, just east of the historic city center and close to the waterfront. This impressive Baroque industrial complex, once the largest sugar factory in the former empire, today holds the sweet history of the city. The museum tells the story of Rijeka through everyday life, industry, maritime heritage, music and civic culture, with interactive exhibits, photographs and objects from the nineteenth century onwards. It also manages other locations in the city, but the Sugar Palace is its main and most visited address. Thanks to its central position, the museum is an ideal starting point for exploring Rijeka. Within a short walk you can visit the Maritime and History Museum of the Croatian Littoral located in the former Governor's Palace, the Natural History Museum and the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art. The famous Korzo, the main pedestrian promenade filled with shops and cafes, leads you to St. Vitus Cathedral, the iconic baroque rotunda and symbol of Rijeka, and to the City Clock Tower. A little further up the hill, the medieval Trsat Castle offers panoramic views over the Kvarner Bay, while the Rječina river and the bustling Rijeka market are also nearby.
