Church of St. Francis Pula

About

Tucked against the upper town’s medieval walls, the Church of St. Francis is one of Pula’s quiet treasures. Built in the late 13th century for the Franciscan order, it reflects the simplicity and humility associated with the friars. Its Gothic façade is understated, but the interior reveals a remarkable blend of devotion, craftsmanship, and history. Inside, the church’s most striking feature is the Romanesque‑Gothic wooden choir, carved in 1314. Each seat is decorated with delicate floral and geometric motifs, making it one of the oldest preserved choir stalls in Croatia. The main altar holds a 15th‑century polyptych attributed to the Venetian master Francesco da Milano, whose vivid colours and expressive saints contrast beautifully with the church’s austere stone walls. The adjoining cloister is a peaceful highlight. Its small courtyard, framed by simple arches, once served as a space for contemplation and study. Today it offers a moment of calm in the centre of the city. Visitors can also see fragments of medieval frescoes and inscriptions that hint at the church’s long monastic life.

Church of St. Francis Pula
Location

You can find the church located on the slopes of the central hill in Pula’s historic core, sitting just off the main path that connects the waterfront to the upper fortress. Its hillside position means it is slightly elevated, giving it a calm, detached atmosphere even though it is just steps away from the most popular spots in town. The location is perfect for sightseeing because it acts as a bridge between the lower city square and the upper town landmarks. If you walk just a few steps down the hill, you will land directly in the Forum, Pula’s main square, where you can explore the grand Temple of Augustus and enjoy an outdoor coffee. If you head up the path directly behind the monastery, you will quickly reach the ancient Roman Theater ruins and the Pula Citadel, the star-shaped fortress that sits at the very top of the hill and provides spectacular panoramic views of the entire harbor.
