Pula Citadel

Rising above the old town, the Pula Citadel (Kaštel) is a Venetian fortress built in the 17th century to guard the harbour and control access to the Adriatic. Its star‑shaped layout follows the era’s military fashion, designed to resist cannon fire and provide wide defensive angles. From the ramparts you get one of the best panoramas in the city: the Roman amphitheatre, the harbour, and the layered rooftops of Pula’s historic core. Inside, the fortress houses the Historical and Maritime Museum of Istria. The collection is compact but rich, tracing local life from prehistory to the modern era. Visitors can see Roman artefacts, medieval weapons, Venetian naval equipment, and personal items from everyday Istrian families. A particularly engaging section focuses on Pula’s shipbuilding heritage, with models and tools that reveal how the city became a major Austro‑Hungarian naval base. The casemates and inner courtyards are atmospheric, with stone passages that still feel like active defensive corridors. Seasonal exhibitions often animate the space with contemporary art or archaeology displays. The blend of sweeping views, layered history, and preserved military architecture makes the Citadel one of Pula’s most rewarding climbs.
