Naval Observatory

The Naval Observatory is one of Pula’s most intriguing Austro‑Hungarian scientific buildings, built in 1871 to support the empire’s growing naval base. Positioned on Monte Zaro hill, it offered clear, stable views of the night sky—ideal for astronomical measurements that were essential for navigation. Officers trained here learned to calculate longitude, determine ship positions, and use celestial bodies to guide long‑distance voyages. Inside, the observatory retains its quiet, scholarly atmosphere. The central hall leads to rooms once filled with precision instruments: sextants, chronometers, and telescopes used to teach naval cadets. Although the original equipment is no longer present, the structure itself reveals how the building functioned. The circular observation room, with its rotating dome, is the highlight. Its mechanism allowed astronomers to track stars across the sky with remarkable accuracy. Visitors can also explore small exhibition areas that explain the role of astronomy in maritime history and Pula’s importance as a naval centre. Period photographs show officers studying charts under lamplight, while architectural details—thick walls, narrow staircases, and the elegant dome—reflect the building’s scientific purpose.
