Fort Bourguignon

Fort Bourguignon is one of Pula’s most atmospheric Austro‑Hungarian fortifications, built in the late 19th century as part of the city’s defensive ring. Its circular layout is unusual: instead of the typical star‑shaped plan, the fort uses a compact drum‑like structure with thick concrete walls and earth covering, designed to absorb artillery fire. This shape also allowed soldiers to move quickly around the perimeter, giving the fort excellent defensive visibility. Inside, visitors can explore vaulted corridors, ammunition rooms, and the central courtyard, where gun positions once stood. The fort’s interior still carries the raw, utilitarian feel of military engineering—narrow passages, reinforced ceilings, and cleverly concealed ventilation shafts. One of the most interesting details is the rotating gun platform system, a technological innovation that allowed rapid repositioning of heavy artillery. Today, Fort Bourguignon is known not only for its history but also for its modern cultural life. The fort occasionally hosts concerts, exhibitions, and alternative events, transforming its rugged spaces into creative venues. The contrast between 19th‑century military architecture and contemporary artistic energy makes it one of Pula’s most distinctive historical sites.
