St. Peter's Church
About

St. Peter’s Church (Peterskirche) in Vienna is a stunning Baroque masterpiece built between 1701 and 1733, designed by Johann Lukas von Hildebrandt and inspired by St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome. It stands on one of Vienna’s oldest Christian sites, with a history dating back to the 4th century when the city was a Roman camp called Vindobona. The church is renowned for its richly decorated oval interior, featuring intricate stucco work, gilded details, and a magnificent dome fresco by Johann Michael Rottmayr depicting the Coronation of the Virgin Mary. The high altar showcases the altarpiece “The Healing of the Lame Man” by Martino Altomonte. Outside, the church’s towers are said to have been inspired by Ottoman tents from the 1683 siege of Vienna, and a relief on the side depicts the legendary founding by Charlemagne. Despite its relatively small footprint, the church’s compact design creates a surprisingly spacious and richly adorned interior, making it a significant spiritual and architectural landmark in Vienna’s historic center. It has been a place of continuous worship for over 1600 years and remains a serene retreat amid the bustling city streets.
