The Secession Building, or Secessionsgebäude, is a striking example of Art Nouveau architecture located at Friedrichstraße 12, 1010 Vienna, Austria. Designed by Joseph Maria Olbrich and completed in 1898, it served as the exhibition hall for the Vienna Secession, a group of artists who broke away from traditional art institutions to embrace modernism. The building's most iconic feature is its golden dome, made of 2,500 gilded iron laurel leaves, often affectionately called the "golden cabbage." Above the entrance, the motto "To every age its art, to every art its freedom" reflects the Secessionist movement's philosophy. Inside, the building houses Gustav Klimt's famous Beethoven Frieze, a masterpiece of Secession style. The Secession Building continues to host contemporary art exhibitions, blending its historical significance with a forward-looking artistic program.
