About

The Kuffner Observatory in Vienna is a historic astronomical site located in the Ottakring district, perched on the slope of Gallitzinberg. Built between 1884 and 1886 by philanthropist Moriz von Kuffner, it was originally a private research institute and quickly gained international recognition for its contributions to stellar photometry and positional astronomy. The observatory houses several rare instruments, including a heliometer, meridian circle, and vertical circle, all preserved in working condition. After periods of closure and refurbishment, it reopened in 1995 as a public education facility under the direction of the Folk High School Ottakring. Today, it offers guided tours, lectures, and night sky observations, continuing its legacy as a center for scientific learning and cultural heritage.

Kuffner Observatory is located at Johann-Staud-Straße 10, on the western slopes of the Gallitzinberg in Vienna’s Ottakring district. This historic observatory, established in 1886 by philanthropist Moriz von Kuffner, occupies a hilltop position at 302 meters elevation, offering not only a retreat for astronomical observation but also panoramic views across Vienna. Originally founded as a private research institute, it is now operated as a public education center and museum, featuring significant 19th-century scientific instruments—such as a grand refractor telescope, a rare heliometer, and Austria’s largest historical meridian circle. The observatory is surrounded by the vibrant and culturally diverse Ottakring district, known for its lively mix of traditional Viennese culture and modern multicultural flair. Just a short distance down the slope is Wilhelminenberg with its scenic palace and walking trails, while the sprawling green spaces of Steinhofgründe are also nearby, providing a tranquil escape. In the neighborhood, visitors can experience the historic Ottakringer Brewery with tasting tours, visit the bustling Brunnenmarkt—one of Europe’s longest street markets—or relax at Yppenplatz’s lively restaurants and cafes.
