Original documents, personal items, and multimedia installations bring his story vividly to life. Visitors can also see where he composed parts of the Eroica Symphony and the Tempest Sonata. The Beethoven Museum is located at Probusgasse 6 in the Heiligenstadt district, 1190 Vienna. Set in the house where Beethoven sought solace in 1802 as he faced the onset of deafness, the museum immerses visitors in the composer’s life and creative process. Here, Beethoven wrote the poignant Heiligenstädter Testament and composed significant works, including the “Eroica” symphony and the Opus 31 piano sonatas. The museum features 14 exhibition rooms with original artifacts, early hearing devices, and interactive displays that recreate Beethoven’s world. Heiligenstadt, once a tranquil spa village, is now part of Vienna’s leafy 19th district. Nearby, visitors can enjoy the traditional Viennese wine tavern Mayer am Pfarrplatz, where Beethoven also lived briefly in 1817, and stroll along the Beethovengang, a picturesque path often visited by the composer. The area is known for its peaceful atmosphere, far from the city center’s bustle, and offers a unique glimpse into Beethoven’s Vienna. The museum is easily reached by public transport, with the 37A bus and U4 subway line connecting to Heiligenstadt station, followed by a short walk.
