The Latvian Film Museum in Riga is the country’s only institution dedicated to the history and art of cinema. Founded in 1988, it offers a behind-the-scenes look at filmmaking through its permanent exhibition “Behind the Screen,” which explores the evolution of film technology, production roles, and Latvia’s cinematic milestones. Housed in an 18th-century building, the museum provides an intimate setting for screenings, lectures, and creative workshops. Visitors can discover Latvia’s early film pioneers, learn about animation techniques, and trace the development of national cinema from the silent era to the digital age. The museum also curates the “Cinema Paths of Riga,” a city-wide initiative that maps historic filming locations and celebrates Riga’s role as a cinematic hub. Currently undergoing renovation, the museum is set to reopen in August 2025, continuing its mission to educate and inspire through the lens of Latvian film heritage.
