The Latvian National Opera and Ballet, housed in a grand 19th-century building on Aspazijas Boulevard in Riga, is the country’s premier venue for classical performing arts. Originally constructed in 1863 as the Riga City Theater, the building was redesigned after a fire in 1882 and became home to the national opera company in 1919. Today, it stages nearly 200 performances each season, spanning classical and contemporary opera, ballet, and children’s productions. The company has launched the careers of internationally acclaimed artists and continues to attract top talent. Its resident ballet troupe, the only professional one in Latvia, upholds the traditions of the Russian school while embracing modern choreography.
