Daile Theatre is one of Riga’s most prominent cultural institutions and the largest professional theatre in the Baltic States. Founded in 1920 by visionary director Eduards Smiļģis, the theatre has long been known for its bold artistic style and commitment to clarity, simplicity, and passion. Since 1977, it has been housed in a striking modernist building on Brīvības Street, designed by architect Marta Staņa. The venue features three performance spaces—the Large Hall, Small Hall, and Chamber Hall—allowing for a diverse repertoire that ranges from classical drama to contemporary works. Daile Theatre stages around eight new productions each season, complemented by a rich programme of Latvian and international plays. With its in-house workshops for set and costume design, the theatre maintains a strong tradition of visual innovation. Under the leadership of Artistic Director Viesturs Kairišs, Daile continues to evolve as a dynamic and inclusive space for theatrical expression, drawing over 200,000 visitors annually and playing a vital role in Latvia’s cultural life.
