Princes Park in Liverpool is a historic public park located in Toxteth, just two miles southeast of the city centre. Designed by Joseph Paxton and opened in 1842, it was one of the earliest examples of a planned urban park in England, setting a precedent for Victorian park design. Originally developed by philanthropist Richard Vaughan Yates, the park was intended to improve public health and social wellbeing, with its costs offset by surrounding Georgian-style housing. The park features a serpentine lake, a circular carriage drive, and ornamental entrances, including the striking Sunburst Gates. A red granite obelisk commemorates Yates’s contribution, while a gravestone for Judy the donkey, who gave rides to children for over two decades, adds a charming touch of local lore. Once part of the Royal hunting forest of Toxteth, Princes Park was gifted to the city in 1849 and later became fully public in 1918. Today, it remains a Grade II* listed site, valued for its landscape heritage and tranquil atmosphere.
