The Port of Liverpool Building, completed in 1907, is a majestic example of Edwardian Baroque architecture and one of the city’s celebrated “Three Graces” on the Pier Head. Designed by Sir Arnold Thornely and F.B. Hobbs with Briggs and Wolstenholme, it was built as the headquarters of the Mersey Docks and Harbour Board, symbolising Liverpool’s global maritime power. Its reinforced concrete frame, clad in Portland stone, is crowned by a striking central dome and corner cupolas, while intricate sculptures and maritime motifs adorn the façade. Inside, opulent detailing reflected the prestige of the port, with stained glass windows commemorating nations that traded through Liverpool—two of which survived the Blitz. Serving the MDHB for 87 years, the building underwent a major restoration in the early 21st century and now houses offices and commercial spaces. Still a defining feature of the waterfront, it stands as a proud testament to the city’s seafaring heritage and architectural grandeur.
Liverpool United KingdomThe Port of Liverpool Building stands at Pier Head, Liverpool, forming the southern anchor of the city’s Three Graces along the historic waterfront. Its domed Edwardian Baroque architecture faces the River Mersey and sits between the Cunard Building and the Royal Liver Building, within walking distance of James Street station. The nearby area features the Beatles Statue, Mersey Ferry terminal, and the Museum of Liverpool. Public promenades and event spaces line the waterfront, with Albert Dock’s maritime museums, shops, and restaurants a short stroll away. Major city centre sites, including Liverpool ONE and vibrant cultural venues, are easily accessible from this prime riverside location, making it a key part of Liverpool’s UNESCO-recognised historic heart.
