Croxteth Hall, on the edge of Liverpool, is one of Merseyside’s most characterful historic houses, a place where four centuries of aristocratic life unfold room by room. Once the seat of the Earls of Sefton, the hall preserves an unusually complete set of interiors, allowing visitors to step directly into the world of a great English estate. Inside, the Victorian Dining Room stands out with its rich panelling, glittering silverware and portraits that reveal the social ambitions of the Molyneux family. The Georgian Entrance Hall offers a striking contrast, its clean lines and classical proportions reflecting the elegance of the 18th century. The Old Library, filled with leather‑bound volumes and family papers, is one of the most atmospheric spaces, hinting at the intellectual and political interests of the Earls. Croxteth’s Edwardian Drawing Room showcases delicate plasterwork and fine furniture, while the Servants’ Quarters provide a rare, well‑preserved look at the working life behind the scenes, including kitchens, sculleries and the butler’s pantry. The Queen Anne Wing, the oldest part of the house, contains intimate chambers with creaking floors and period textiles. One of the hall’s most intriguing features is its connection to the last Earl of Sefton, who died in 1972.

You’ll find it at Croxteth Park, Liverpool L12 0HB, with the main vehicle entrance best approached via Muirhead Avenue East using the L11 1EH postcode for parking. This grand former home of the Earls of Sefton is surrounded by its own 500-acre country park, complete with woodlands, a Victorian walled garden and a working farm, so there’s already plenty to enjoy right on the doorstep. Just a short distance away in West Derby village you’ll come across the historic West Derby Courthouse, a neat little reminder of the area’s older roots. A bit further on, Knowsley Safari offers a proper family day out with animals and drives through the parkland. Football fans are well sorted too – Anfield, home of Liverpool FC, and Goodison Park for Everton are both only a few miles away, with Stanley Park sitting between them as a pleasant green space. The Casbah Coffee Club, a small but famous spot in Beatles history, is also nearby in West Derby.
