About

The Liverpool Blitz Memorial, located in the grounds of St Nicholas Church near the Pier Head, honours the thousands of civilians killed during the German bombing raids of the Second World War. Designed by local sculptor Tom Murphy and unveiled in 2000, the bronze statue depicts a mother holding a baby, calling to her young son to leave his toy plane and seek shelter—an image that captures both the innocence of childhood and the urgency of survival. Around 4,000 people were killed and more than 10,000 injured during the Blitz, making Liverpool the most heavily bombed provincial city in Britain due to its vital role in the Battle of the Atlantic. The memorial stands as a poignant reminder of the courage, sacrifice, and resilience of ordinary men, women, and children, ensuring their stories remain part of the city’s living memory.
