The Queen Victoria Monument in Liverpool is a grand neo-Baroque landmark dominating Derby Square, built between 1902 and 1906 on the former site of Liverpool Castle. Designed by F.M. Simpson with Willink and Thicknesse, and adorned with 26 bronze figures by C.J. Allen, it is one of the most ambitious tributes to the monarch. At its heart stands a 4.4-metre bronze statue of Queen Victoria beneath an open domed canopy supported by Ionic columns. Around the base, four sculptural groups represent agriculture, commerce, industry, and education, while figures above the columns symbolise justice, wisdom, charity, and peace. Crowning the dome is a striking figure of Fame, trumpet in hand. Crafted from Portland stone and rich in allegorical detail, the Grade II listed monument reflects Liverpool’s civic pride at the height of its maritime power and remains a focal point of the city’s historic and cultural landscape.
