Wellington’s Column, also known as the Waterloo Memorial, is a towering neoclassical monument in Liverpool’s cultural quarter, standing at the corner of William Brown Street and Lime Street. Built between 1861 and 1865 to honour Arthur Wellesley, the 1st Duke of Wellington, it commemorates his victory over Napoleon at the Battle of Waterloo. Designed by Scottish architect Andrew Lawson, with the bronze statue by his brother George Anderson Lawson, the monument rises 132 feet, its fluted column crowned by the Duke in military dress. The pedestal is adorned with bronze plaques and eagles, while the statue itself was cast from bronze taken from captured French cannons, symbolising triumph and peace. Inside, a spiral staircase of 169 steps once led to a viewing platform. Surrounded by landmarks such as St George’s Hall and the Walker Art Gallery, Wellington’s Column remains a striking tribute to military achievement and Victorian civic pride, anchoring one of Liverpool’s most historic streetscapes.
