Founded by Nicolaus August Otto, inventor of the four-stroke engine, Deutz AG established the world’s first engine factory in 1864, and its legacy is preserved today in this remarkable museum. Housed at the company’s Technikum, the collection features over fifty historic engines, including Otto’s groundbreaking atmospheric gas engine of 1867, the original four-stroke prototype from 1876, and the first crosshead-less diesel engine from 1898. These pioneering machines illustrate the rapid development of engine design and Cologne’s role as a hub of industrial innovation. Alongside historic exhibits, the museum also presents modern advancements, from efficient diesel technology to hydrogen-powered engines, highlighting the company’s ongoing commitment to sustainable mobility. Guided tours, available by appointment, provide visitors with expert insights into the engineering milestones that shaped global transport and industry. It is situated on the premises of the DEUTZ AG company, showcasing over 150 years of engine history and innovation. The museum is housed in a historic industrial site known for engine manufacturing developments pioneered by Nicolaus August Otto. Nearby, the area is primarily industrial with some residential parts, and visitors may also explore other Cologne attractions within a short transit ride, although the immediate vicinity is quieter compared to the city centre. Access to the museum is by prior reservation for guided tours as it is not open for general walk-in visits.​
