The Basilica of St. Kunibert is the youngest of Cologne’s twelve great Romanesque churches, consecrated in 1247 just one year before construction began on the Gothic cathedral. Standing near the Rhine in the northern Old Town, it is dedicated to St. Kunibert, a 7th‑century bishop of Cologne whose tomb lies within the church. The basilica is distinguished by its harmonious Romanesque design, with a striking trefoil choir, robust towers, and richly decorated interiors. Visitors can admire colorful stained-glass windows dating back to the 13th century, medieval wall paintings, and a magnificent bronze chandelier from the 15th century. The church also houses relics of Saints Kunibert and the Two Ewalds, making it an important site of pilgrimage. According to local legend, the Kunibertusbrunnen, a well beneath the church, is where Cologne’s children are said to come from, adding a whimsical layer to its history. Despite heavy damage during World War II, the basilica was carefully restored and continues to serve as both a parish church and a cultural landmark, embodying Cologne’s enduring blend of faith, legend, and architectural beauty.

Basilica of St. Kunibert is located at Kunibertsklostergasse 2, 50668 Köln, in the north of Cologne’s Old Town, just steps from the Rhine River and within the historical Kunibertsviertel district. The church is about 700 meters north of Cologne Central Station and can easily be reached on foot via Breslauer Platz and Johannisstraße. Its surroundings feature peaceful green areas, local galleries, and street art, as well as restaurants and traditional breweries typical of the neighborhood. The location places the basilica close to the river promenade for scenic walks, while the city centre, Cologne Cathedral, and Museum Ludwig are also within walking distance, making it well-situated for visitors interested in exploring both heritage sites and the cultural heart of Cologne.​
