Housed in the historic EL-DE Haus, once the headquarters of the Cologne Gestapo from 1935 to 1945, the museum preserves one of the most authentic sites of Nazi terror. Its basement prison, where countless people were detained, tortured, and in some cases executed, still bears over 1,800 inscriptions and drawings left by prisoners—haunting testimonies of persecution and resistance. The permanent exhibition documents the rise of National Socialism in Cologne, the machinery of oppression, and the fates of Jewish citizens, forced laborers, and political opponents. Alongside its role as a memorial, the center is also a research and education hub, offering lectures, archives, and programs that confront both the history of the Nazi era and its relevance today. By combining historical evidence with personal stories, the NS-DOK ensures that the memory of those who suffered under National Socialism remains a powerful call for vigilance, human rights, and democracy in the present.
