About

Designed by architects Hadi Teherani and Alfons Linster, these three crane-shaped buildings were constructed between 2006 and 2010 as part of a major urban redevelopment project. Their bold cantilevered design pays homage to the harbor’s industrial past, resembling the loading cranes that once dominated the waterfront. Each structure stands 61 meters tall and stretches 70 meters in length, with two five-storey blocks forming the horizontal “crane arm” at a height of 40 meters. The ensemble includes one residential building and two office towers, all offering panoramic views of the river and city. Beyond their architectural impact, the Kranhäuser have become a symbol of Cologne’s fusion of heritage and innovation. The surrounding Rheinauhafen district is a lively mix of galleries, restaurants, and promenades, making it a popular destination for locals and visitors alike.

The Kranhäuser are located in the Rheinauhafen district in the southern part of Cologne's city centre, along the Rhine River waterfront. These three striking, crane-shaped buildings stand as architectural landmarks in this modern harbour area, known for its upscale offices, luxury apartments, cultural venues, and vibrant public promenade. Nearby attractions include the German Sports & Olympia Museum, the Imhoff-Schokoladenmuseum (Chocolate Museum), and various restaurants and cafés like the acclaimed Ox & Klee. The district offers spacious walkways along the river, perfect for scenic strolls, and the area is well connected by tram lines 15 and 16 at the Ubierring stop and by bus line 133 that stops directly at Rheinauhafen. The district's seamless blend of historic port elements and contemporary design makes it a lively and appealing destination for culture and architecture enthusiasts.​
