The Remparts d’Avignon are among the most striking medieval fortifications in France, encircling the historic heart of the city with nearly five kilometers of stone walls. Built in the 14th century under the papacy, they were designed to protect Avignon during its role as the seat of the Popes. Today, the ramparts remain largely intact, punctuated by imposing towers and monumental gates that once controlled access to the city. Walking along their perimeter offers sweeping views of the Rhône and the surrounding countryside, while inside lies the vibrant old town with its narrow streets and lively squares. More than a defensive structure, the ramparts symbolize Avignon’s resilience and heritage, standing as a reminder of the city’s medieval grandeur and its enduring place in European history. They are not only architectural marvels but also living witnesses to centuries of culture, faith, and community.
Avignon France
Remparts d’Avignon, the medieval city walls of Avignon, encircle the entire historic centre on the left bank of the Rhône River in the Vaucluse department of Provence, southeastern France. Stretching for about 4.3 kilometres, they form a continuous ring around the old town, enclosing key landmarks such as the Palais des Papes, the Rocher des Doms gardens, the Cathédrale Notre-Dame des Doms and the famous Pont Saint-Bénézet bridge. Several city gates and riverfront sections of the ramparts lie close to the Rhône quays, river-cruise docks, and central areas like Place de l’Horloge, making the walls a prominent feature immediately bordering Avignon’s main shopping streets, cafés, hotels and cultural venues.
