Rising above the Rhône River, the Palais des Papes in Avignon is one of Europe’s largest and most important medieval Gothic buildings. Constructed in the 14th century when the papacy relocated from Rome, it became both fortress and residence, symbolizing the immense influence of the Church on Western Christianity. Built in less than twenty years under Popes Benedict XII and Clement VI, the palace impresses with its vast halls, chapels, and frescoes by Italian artist Matteo Giovannetti. Today, visitors can explore more than twenty rooms, including the grand ceremonial spaces and private papal apartments, while enjoying panoramic views from the ramparts. The Palais des Papes is located at Place du Palais in the heart of Avignon's historic center, perched on the Rocher des Doms overlooking the Rhône River in southern France. This massive Gothic fortress, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is a short 15-minute walk from Avignon Centre train station or easily accessible by bus, taxi, or bike paths within the medieval city walls. Nearby landmarks enrich the visitor experience. The famous Pont d’Avignon (Pont Saint-Bénézet), another UNESCO gem, lies just below across the river, famous for its partial span and folk song legacy. Adjoining to the north, the Rocher des Doms gardens offer sweeping views of Provence, perfect for strolls amid fountains and greenery.
