The Abbaye de Saint‑Ruf is one of Avignon’s oldest monastic foundations, with origins dating back to the 11th century. Established by Augustinian canons, it played a vital role in shaping the city’s religious and cultural life during the Middle Ages. Though much of the abbey has been lost over time, its surviving church and cloister fragments still evoke the grandeur of Romanesque architecture. The abbey became influential across Europe, with its congregation spreading to Spain and Italy, and even producing a pope, Adrian IV, who began his religious career here. Abbaye de Saint-Ruf is located at Avenue du Moulin de Notre-Dame in the southern part of Avignon, Vaucluse department, Provence, southeastern France, just outside the city's medieval ramparts near the historic Via Agrippa Roman road. Founded in the 11th century on a 5th-century Paleochristian site, its ruins—including the apse, bell tower, transept, and nave remnants amid gardens—offer a serene green space with playgrounds and pétanque courts away from the bustling center. Nearby are the ramparts' southern gates, residential neighborhoods, the Durance River area, and a short walk or bus ride to Avignon's core attractions like Place de l'Horloge, Palais des Papes, and Rhône quays.​
