The Bridge of Avignon, officially known as the Pont Saint-Bénézet, is one of the city’s most iconic landmarks. Built in the 12th century, it once spanned the Rhône River with 22 arches, linking Avignon to Villeneuve-lès-Avignon. Legend tells of a shepherd boy, Bénézet, who inspired its construction after claiming divine guidance. Over centuries, floods and the force of the river destroyed much of the structure, leaving only four arches standing today. Despite its partial ruin, the bridge remains a symbol of Avignon’s history and resilience, immortalized in the famous French song “Sur le Pont d’Avignon,” which celebrates the joy of dancing on its span. Visitors are drawn to its romantic silhouette and the panoramic views it offers of the river and the medieval city. The Pont Saint-Bénézet continues to embody the spirit of Avignon, blending legend, heritage, and enduring beauty.
