Perched above Funchal in the hillside parish of Monte, the Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Monte is one of Madeira’s most cherished pilgrimage sites. The church, rebuilt in the 18th century after an earthquake destroyed the original chapel, blends elegant Baroque lines with a serene mountain setting that offers sweeping views over the bay. Inside, visitors find a peaceful sanctuary dedicated to the island’s patron saint, whose statue is carried through the streets each August during the famous Assumption festivities. The church also holds the tomb of Charles I of Austria, adding a layer of historical intrigue to its spiritual significance. Reached by winding roads, lush gardens, or the iconic Monte cable car, this hilltop church remains a place where devotion, history, and landscape come together in a uniquely Madeiran experience.

Location

Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Monte is located on Rampa da Sacristia, in the hilltop parish of Monte above the city of Funchal, on Madeira Island, Portugal. It stands just a short walk from the upper station of the Funchal–Monte cable car, making it easily accessible from the city centre. Nearby are several of Monte’s main attractions, including the start of the famous Monte wicker toboggan rides, Monte Palace Madeira and its tropical gardens, as well as other landscaped parks and viewpoints overlooking Funchal bay.
