Molenmuseum De Valk in Leiden is a beautifully preserved 18th‑century tower mill that offers a rare glimpse into the city’s milling heritage. Built in 1743 and once one of nineteen windmills standing on Leiden’s ramparts, it is the only one that survives today. The museum occupies all seven floors of the mill, allowing visitors to explore original living quarters, storage spaces and the impressive wooden machinery that once powered grain production. The miller’s house, still furnished in early 20th‑century style, adds a personal dimension to the experience, showing how work and home life were closely intertwined. From the upper levels, sweeping views over Leiden reveal the mill’s historic role in the cityscape. As both a working monument and an engaging museum, De Valk brings Dutch milling history vividly to life in the heart of Leiden.
