Morspoort

About

Morspoort is one of Leiden’s last surviving city gates and a striking reminder of the city’s 17th‑century fortifications. Built in 1669 to replace an earlier wooden gate, it stands at the western edge of the historic centre, marked by its elegant Dutch Renaissance design and distinctive octagonal dome. The gate takes its name from the former marshy meadows outside the city, once known as De Morsch, and for centuries it served as both an entrance and a small prison, earning the nickname “Gallows Gate.” Today, Morspoort remains a charming landmark overlooking the Morssingel, offering a picturesque view of the canal and nearby windmill. Its compact scale, decorative stonework, and rich history make it an inviting stop for anyone exploring Leiden’s old defensive ring and atmospheric waterways.

Morspoort Leiden is located at Morsstraat 66, 2312 BN Leiden, Netherlands, marking the western entrance to the historic city centre along the scenic Morssingel canal. Built in 1669 as one of only two surviving city gates from Leiden's original eight, it stands near the Morspoort parking garage and offers striking views of the waterway and Mannerist architecture. Nearby are the National Museum of World Cultures (Museum Volkenkunde), Haarlemmerstraat shopping street with cafés, and Leiden Central Station just a 5-minute walk away, connecting easily to the Burcht van Leiden, Pieterskerk, and central canals for pedestrian exploration.
