Heilige Lodewijkkerk, also known as the Church of St. Louis, is one of Leiden’s most atmospheric historic churches, standing along the Steenschuur in the city centre. Its origins date back to 1477, when it was built as a chapel for pilgrims travelling to Santiago de Compostela. Over the centuries, the building shifted roles—from a place of worship to a textile inspection hall during Leiden’s thriving cloth industry, and later a grain warehouse—before returning to the Catholic community in the early 19th century. The church’s façade, dating from 1538, and its distinctive tower from 1594 reflect layers of architectural history shaped by devotion, industry, and resilience. Today, Heilige Lodewijkkerk remains an active parish church and a serene reminder of Leiden’s rich spiritual and cultural past.
