St. Joseph Church, also known as the Herensingelkerk, is one of Leiden’s most prominent Roman Catholic landmarks and the largest parish church still in use in the city. Completed in 1925 and designed by the Van der Laan brothers, it reflects the expressive architectural style of the early 20th century, with its tall brick tower, pointed spire, and striking geometric forms. The church was built to serve the growing Catholic community outside the old city centre and soon became a spiritual anchor for the neighbourhood. Inside, warm brickwork, graceful arches, and richly decorated altars create an atmosphere of solemn beauty. As a national monument, St. Joseph Church remains an important part of Leiden’s cultural and religious heritage, hosting services, concerts, and community gatherings in a setting that blends tradition with architectural character.
