Zijlpoort is one of Leiden’s two surviving 17th‑century city gates and a beautifully preserved example of Dutch Classicist architecture. Built in 1667 by city architect Willem van der Helm, it stands at the eastern edge of the historic centre, overlooking the water where the Oude Rijn enters the city. Its elegant façade, sculpted by Rombout Verhulst, features symbolic motifs that once expressed civic authority and pride. Designed in a distinctive parallelogram shape to connect seamlessly with both the city wall and the bridge, the gate also housed various community functions over the centuries, including a rhetoricians’ guild, a school for poor children, and later a municipal warehouse. Today, Zijlpoort remains a serene and picturesque landmark, framing the canal with its graceful silhouette and offering a timeless glimpse into Leiden’s fortified past.

Zijlpoort Leiden is located at Haven, 2312 ML Leiden, Netherlands, at the eastern edge of the historic city centre where the Zijl River flows into the Oude Rijn along the Herensingel canal. This classicist 1667 city gate, one of only two survivors from Leiden's original eight along with Morspoort, features a distinctive parallelogram shape to connect the city walls and bridge, adorned with sculptures by Rombout Verhulst. Nearby stands the Zijlpoort Cemetery established in 1828, Haarlemmerstraat shopping street with cafés, St. Joseph Church, and National Museum of Antiquities, all within easy walking distance, while Leiden Central Station is about 10 minutes away on foot.
