Espoo Cathedral is the oldest surviving building in Espoo, a medieval stone church whose earliest parts date back to the 1480s. Originally built under the guidance of an unknown “Espoo master,” it later evolved through centuries of expansions, including its transformation into a cruciform church in the early 1800s. Inside, visitors can admire remarkable 16th‑century murals depicting biblical stories and scenes from everyday life, once hidden under layers of whitewash and rediscovered during 20th‑century restorations. The cathedral’s bell tower, completed in 1767, adds to its historic character, while the surrounding churchyard and vicarage form a peaceful heritage setting. Since 2004, the church has served as the seat of the Evangelical Lutheran Diocese of Espoo and remains an active venue for worship, concerts and community events, making it both a spiritual centre and a cultural landmark.

Espoo Cathedral is located at Kirkkopuisto 5, 02770 Espoo, in the Espoon keskus district by the Espoo River, a short walk from Espoo town centre and the main bus and rail stops. The medieval stone church stands in a peaceful churchyard park with the surrounding Lagstad and Lagstad School Museum area, making it easy to combine a visit with Lagstad’s historic school buildings and nearby Espoo River promenade walks. Nearby, visitors can also reach Espoo City Museum sites, central shopping streets, and short‑distance bus connections to Tapiola and the wider Espoo cultural cluster, including EMMA and the Espoo Cultural Centre.
