Haukilahti Water Tower in Espoo is one of the city’s most distinctive landmarks, rising above the coastal landscape with its striking, futuristic silhouette. Completed in 1968 and designed by architect Erkko Virkkunen, the tower is instantly recognisable for its flying‑saucer‑like form, inspired in part by the space‑age aesthetics of its era. Built using an innovative method in which the massive concrete water container was cast on the ground and hydraulically lifted into place, the structure reflects a bold moment in Finnish engineering. At 45 metres tall and standing 76 metres above sea level, it offers sweeping views over Espoo and the Gulf of Finland from its circular restaurant, Haikaranpesä, located at the top. Still in active use as part of the city’s water supply system, the tower remains the only publicly accessible water tower in the metropolitan area, combining utility, architecture and panoramic scenery in a single iconic destination.

Haukilahti Water Tower is located in the Haukilahti neighbourhood of southern Espoo, at Hauenkallio 3, 02170 Espoo, on the seashore of the Gulf of Finland. The landmark sits just inland from the Haukilahti marina and its waterfront promenade, with nearby attractions including the Haukilahti and Matinkylä districts, Olari train stop, and the Tapiola–WeeGee cultural cluster, which is within a short bus or metro ride and includes EMMA – Espoo Museum of Modern Art, the Espoo Cultural Centre, and several other Espoo City Museum sites. The tower also overlooks the Haikaranpesä restaurant inside its upper level and offers easy access to coastal walks, neighbourhood parks, and residential areas along the Espoo waterfront.
