Laajalahti Nature Reserve in Espoo is one of southern Finland’s most important wetland habitats, celebrated for its exceptional birdlife and serene coastal landscapes. The shallow bay, extensive reed beds and coastal meadows create a rich environment where thousands of migratory birds rest each spring and autumn, making it a favourite destination for both dedicated birdwatchers and casual nature lovers. Well‑marked trails, including an accessible 700‑metre route, lead visitors through peaceful forests and along duckboard paths to two observation towers that offer wide, uninterrupted views over the bay. The reserve is also home to Nature House Villa Elfvik, which provides exhibitions, guided tours and seasonal activities that deepen the experience. As a protected area, Laajalahti invites slow, mindful exploration while preserving its delicate ecosystems, offering a rare opportunity to encounter wildlife and coastal nature just moments from the urban heart of Espoo.

Laajalahti Nature Reserve is located along Laajalahti Bay in southern Espoo, stretching from the Villa Elfvik side towards Otaniemi, roughly between the districts of Laajalahti, Ruoholahti, and Otaniemi, with main access points near Elfvikintie 4 and the Laajalahti birdwatching tower at Konemiehentie 2, 02150 Espoo. The reserve sits within cycling and walking distance of Aalto University in Otaniemi and the Laajis sports and event centre, and it is readily reached from Espoo town centre and Helsinki by public bus, bike, and car. Nearby, visitors can also combine a nature trip with the Espoo Waterfront Walkway, Nature House Villa Elfvik, the Laajalahti birdwatching towers, and other coastal trails and cultural sites in Tapiola and Leppävaara [web/171].
