About

Tampere Old Church is a serene wooden landmark standing beside the Central Square, offering a glimpse into the city’s early 19th‑century history. Completed in 1824 and opened in 1825, it was designed by architect Charles Bassi in a simple neoclassical style that contrasts with the later stone churches of Tampere. Its pale wooden exterior, cruciform layout, and calm interior create an atmosphere of quiet dignity. The separate belfry, completed in 1828 by Carl Ludvig Engel, adds a distinctive vertical accent to the square. Inside, the altarpiece by R. W. Ekman depicting Christ in Gethsemane brings a gentle artistic focus to the space. The church has undergone several restorations, most notably in the 1950s, returning it to its original appearance. Today, Tampere Old Church serves both the Swedish‑speaking Lutheran congregation and a wider community, remaining a popular venue for services, concerts, and weddings in the heart of the city.
