The Sumelius Building is one of the most distinctive façades on Tampere’s Central Square, a four‑storey residential and commercial block completed in 1901 for merchant Gösta Sumelius. Designed by the architectural firm Grahn, Hedman & Wasastjerna, it blends late historicism with the emerging Art Nouveau style, visible in its asymmetrical façade, decorative detailing, and elegant corner tower. The building originally housed shops, offices, and apartments, helping to shape Keskustori into a representative urban centre at the turn of the 20th century. Its Jugend character, protected by city planning regulations since 1995, remains a key part of Tampere’s architectural identity. Today, the Sumelius Building continues to be a lively part of the cityscape, with cafés, restaurants, and businesses on the ground floor and mixed uses above, attracting architecture enthusiasts and visitors drawn to its rich ornamentation and historic charm.
