Näsikallio Fountain

About

Näsikallio Fountain is a 1913 Art Nouveau landmark in Tampere’s Näsinpuisto park, where granite terraces and bronze sculptures form one of the city’s earliest major public artworks. Designed by architect Birger Federley with sculptures by Emil Wikström, it is crowned by the North Maiden from the Kalevala, seated on a rainbow and spinning a golden thread. Below her, two family-themed groups portray a grandfather and grandson beside a water wheel, symbolising industry, and a grandmother teaching her granddaughter to knit, reflecting domestic life in early 20th‑century Tampere. Funded by merchant Nikolai Tirkkonen, the fountain stands on a hillside overlooking Lake Näsijärvi, Näsilinna and the Finlayson area. Its peaceful setting and the small Civil War bullet marks on the bronze figures make it both a scenic and historically resonant stop near the city centre.
